London: Macmillan and Co., Ltd, 1919-20. 8vo. 37 volumes, set. Limited edition of 500 sets, signed by the author in volume 1. Original navy cloth, with gilt oak and acorn design to the spines and a gilt oak and acorn roundel with Hardy's initials to each upper board. Top edge rough, others untrimmed. The first ten volumes are mottled on the spines and have some damp-staining to the boards especially towards the bottom corners. These volumes, and a few of the others, appear to have had their jackets stick to them and whoever peeled them off has removed some of the dye and gilt. There is offsetting to the endpapers but the damp has not penetrated and the contents of each volume are clean (and mostly unopened) with occasional slight foxing to most of the volumes. Neat ink ownership to flyleaf of volume 1. Chipped and torn d/ws to volumes 20-22, 25-6, 29-30 and 36. Most volumes very good but the first ten volumes make this merely a good set. Item #4418
The best library edition at a price reflecting the condition of the cloth of the first ten volumes. Volume 1 (see image) is in the worst state.
