Roy Campbell (1901-1957) had been living in Toledo with his wife but, as British citizens, they were evacuated to Marseille in August 1936 to escape the civil war. A few weeks later they were back in England but left for Portugal in January 1937. In June that year, Campbell returned to Spain as a war correspondent with the Republican forces.
