London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1945. Large 8vo. Second edition. Original beige cloth lettered in green on the front board. Illustrated by the author. Small attractive bookplate on front paste down. Australian bookseller's label on fly. Contents clean. Fine. Item #4328
The author's first published book was issued by Country Life just as the Second World War began and struggled to find an audience. As a consequence, most copies were unsold and remained in a warehouse which was destroyed by a Luftwaffe bomb in 1940. This reissue was coloured by Peake in grey, pink, blue and yellow and improves the appearance of this tale of pirates and 'a creature as bright as butter'. A suitably much-travelled copy in bright condition.
