First published in France in 1762 and immediately banned. Anticipating the controversy, the publisher and place were disguised and Néaulme allowed his name to appear on the title page instead of the Parisian Duchesne. It is unclear whether the subterfuge was still operating in 1765 but Rousseau was only able to return to France in 1767. He considered this his most important work.
