Conrad's first novel is largely set in the jungle of Borneo and concerns the Dutchman of the title, his native wife, a suitable match for their daughter and the rumour of a gold mine. The first issue lacks a full stop to the title header on page 43 and is missing the word 'of' from the last line on page 110 and the first 'e' of 'generosity' on the previous line. Both these points are present here. As well as being the start of his writing career in English it is now acclaimed for its portrayal of Nina, the mixed race daughter, as an unusually self-determined character.
