History at Salisbury Cathedral. Rena Gardiner, Canon R. S. Dawson.
History at Salisbury Cathedral

History at Salisbury Cathedral.

Tarrant Monkton: The Workshop Press for the Dean and Chapter, 1967. Tall 8vo. First edition, later issue. The price is given as '50p' and must be after decimalisation in 1971. Original stapled paper covers. Illustrated throughout in colour from hand-drawn lithographic plates. Ink presentation on page one. Near fine. Item #4907

Designed, drawn and printed by Rena Gardiner but with text by Canon Dawson (one of her few collaborations) whose Introduction begins, 'A book of illustrations is able to do what no words can ever achieve. It brings visually to life something of the Cathedral's past and links it with the present.' The artist realises this beautifully. This is a later issue but prior to the second edition of 1980. The colouring is quite different and, for instance, the skies are a grey wash where previously they had been a China blue. The covers also lack the mid blue of earlier issues.

Price: £25.00
