London: Jonathan Cape and The Book Society, 1949. 8vo. First edition. Original red cloth, gilt. Top edge stained red. Folding maps and black and white photographs including a swaggering portrait frontispiece. Corner tips and spine ends a little pushed. Bookplate on fly. Endpapers slightly foxed. Unclipped d/w has a few tiny nicks and a bit of dust-soiling. Fine in near fine dust-wrapper. Item #5042
Published simultaneously with the Jonathan Cape first edition. One of the great autobiographies: Soviet Russia in the 1930s, travels in Central Asia, fighting behind German lines with the Long Range Desert Group in North Africa and parachuting into Yugoslavia to join Tito's guerrillas. A very nice copy.
