The West Coast of Scotland - Skye to Oban. A Shell Guide.

London: Faber and Faber, [1939]. 8vo. First edition, later issue. Original off white cloth, printed in black on the spine, over metal spiral binding. Four colour maps and black and white photographs throughout. 'Seventeen large photographs depicting Highland life and Scenery' in magenta tone. Unclipped jacket has a couple of tiny nicks to the top edge and some very slight rubbing. Fine in fine dust-wrapper. Item #5060

'What it is not is a motorist's guide', (David Heathcote, A Shell Eye on England (2011)). 'West Coast of Scotland is in its own way a very gentlemanly book, wearing its knowledge and politics clearly but lightly, leaving enough space for the reader to make up his own mind, and enough space for some avuncular and full entries and beautifully balanced landscapes.' After the war, the second edition was 'filleted of most of its political content'. First issued by B. T. Batsford in 1938, Faber and Faber bought the series and remaining stock in 1939. This issue is almost identical to the Batsford with the exception of the metal spiral binding and covers, the change of publisher on the title page and the removal of the map opposite the title page which had shown the 12 guides issued by Batsford. The rear turn in lists 15 titles and the back panel of the jacket reproduces the image of a wall with two windows that was on the back of the Batsford comb-bound paperback issue.
