Bound volume of proof lithographs only, containing colour lithograph frontispiece, 2 title pages, and 58 colour lithograph illustrations, many printed recto and verso. Original quarter black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, cream boards, top edge gilt, with slipcase. Spine slightly mottled. Slipcase with light staining to open edges. Near fine in near fine slipcase. Presentation copy from Barnett Freedman, with handwritten ink inscription to the front blank: 'Proofs of Lithographs for Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, Limited Editions Club, U.S.A. Covers, Endpapers, Title - pages and Half titles, for Humphrey from Barnett, July 14 1953'. 'Anna Karenina' was published in 2 volumes in an edition of 1500 copies by The Limited Editions Club in 1951. The artist is known to have had a few sets of proofs of his illustrations made for presentation to friends. Scarce.
