#239 in The World's Classics. 'Half' dust-wrapper. A. L. Rowse (1903-97) treated books as conversations. If he agreed with something it would get a tick in the margin but the fun of opening a book from his library lies in the vituperative remarks, often on one of his hobby-horses. Some of the comments here include, "a great deal more intelligent than most intellectuals", "absurdly low estimate of himself", "cf Swift/ALR". Alice Meynell is quoted on the back of the jacket, "Its sincerity is proved by the unconsciousness of its limitations, by the honesty of its self-satisfaction, and the manliness of its humility." Rowse has added, "Pooh!"
