Paternoster-Row, London: H. D. Symonds, 1797-8. 8vo. 15 volumes, set. Uniformly bound in contemporary tree calf, gilt, with black leather spine labels, 'Barr's Buffon'. The first ten volumes are 'Quadrupeds' and the last five volumes are 'Birds'. Top edges stained brown, others yellow with red speckles. Numerous engraved illustrations throughout. Spines and edges just a little scuffed. Bindings sound and firm. A near fine set. Item #5811

Le Comte de Buffon (1707 -1788) was the greatest French naturalist of the eighteenth century, publishing his Histoire Naturelle in thirty-six quartos during his lifetime. This edition is more compact, is beautifully illustrated and is in a very smart contemporary binding.
