Published to mark the Millennium, members of The Society of Wood Engravers were asked to contribute 'two by two' inch square engravings on the theme of animals going into the Ark. The artists, including Hilary Paynter (who supplied the 'roof' and 'Mrs Noah'), Monica Poole, Andy English, Chris Wormell, Yvonne Skargon, Simon Brett, Miriam Macgregor, Howard Phipps, Sue Scullard, John Lawrence and Sarah van Niekerk, contributed agreed designs which together made a print inspired by the Commentary on the Apocalypse by Beatus, Abbot of Liebana in the John Rylands University Library. The book(s) celebrate this coming together in wonderfully double fashion, mostly with two engravings to a page and opening out in both directions from a shared back cover which has two flaps illustrating the Ark's roof and the rising waters (with floating bodies). Hilary Paynter and Paul Kershaw provide explanatory text. Unusual and ingenious.
From the collection of Yvonne Skargon (1931-2010).
