John Morris was the Controller of the BBC's Third Programme and this anthology was his personal selection from the first decade of broadcasts. Those contributing include Graham Greene, T.S. Eliot, V.S. Pritchett, Henry Reed, Elizabeth Bowen, Max Beerbohm, Isaiah Berlin, E. M. Forster, Nikolaus Pevsner, Bertrand Russell, Stevie Smith and Thomas Mann.
