The sequel to Sabriel and the middle volume of the Abhorsen trilogy. A brilliantly-realised adventure for fans of Philip Pullman or the later Harry Potter novels. Opening fourteen years after the events of Sabriel, Lirael despairs on her birthday that the Sight of the Clayr will ever come to her but perhaps another destiny awaits? Certainly Hedge is not waiting any longer and his intricate schemes threaten the hard-won peace of the Old Kingdom as never before. Sabriel was first published in Australia in 1995. By the time of Lirael's publication, Rowling and Pullman had changed the landscape for young adult fiction. Justly successful as the trilogy is, I think Garth Nix still deserves a much wider readership. Do you dare wade the waters of the Dead before the First Gate although a necromancer may be lurking to pull you under and further into Death?!
