Oxon. A Shell Guide.

London: Faber and Faber, [1939]. 8vo. First edition, second issue. Original off white cloth, overprinted in orange on the spine, with ring binding inside. Two coloured maps and numerous black and white photographs throughout. Advertisement for Shell on the Road at the rear by Edward Bawden. Neat ink ownership on verso of front free endpaper. Unclipped d/w (3s 6d) is rubbed with small loss at the spine ends and corner tips and has a long chip from the top edge of the front panel. Near fine in good + dust-wrapper. Item #4886

One of the most celebrated of the pre-war Guides. The City of Oxford was not included because that had been covered by John Betjeman's An Oxford University Chest (1938). When Faber and Faber took over publication in 1939, they reissued existing titles with a new title page to indicate the change of publisher and put the original limp-covered ring binding in practical stiff cloth boards. The dust-wrapper reproduces the original paper cover illustrations.
