London: Anthony Blond, 1963. 8vo. First edition. Original navy hardcovers, gilt. Jacket design by Bob Gill. Spine ends faded and top corner tips pushed. Edges a bit foxed. Signed by the author in blue ink on the half-title and inscribed, 'Oscar from Simon April, 1989' on the title page. D/w worn, torn, chipped and marked. The front flap is detached and loosely inserted. Very good in poor d/w. Item #6401
The recipient was Lt. Col. J. D. Whitamore (whose surname is given to Otto in a short story pp. 52-5) who was a great friend of the author and was known as Oscar after he arrived as a recruit at the Guards Depot at Caterham with a bowler hat and an umbrella and the squaddies said, 'There's a right Oscar'. Or so he said. The soubriquet stuck.
