First issued on 18th March 1895, the third edition was required by 25th April that year. Surprisingly uncommon for such a popular book, perhaps some of its success was due to the nature of the illustrations which include examples of torture and a plate with a perforated edge so that it could be removed if the owner considered the photograph of a dismembered corpse too gruesome. The plate is attached in this copy.
