The Portrait of a Lady.
London: Macmillan & Co, 1883. 18mo. Three volumes, set. First collected edition. (First published in 1881.) Publisher's terracotta cloth. Spines tanned, with some fading to the tails, and indentations to the titles in the middle. Light marking and rubbing to the boards and tips. Light foxing to the endpapers. The front hinge of volume 1 is beginning to start. In volume 2, the section from pp.99-110 is coming loose owing to the rusted staples. Contents clean and without ownership marks. Very good +. Item #9175
There is a publisher's advertisement at the end of volume 3 for this collected edition noting that the cloth bound issue cost 1s 6d per volume. Rightly considered the greatest of the author's early novels, it was revised for the New York edition in 1908 and this first version is now rarely issued. This appears to be a variant binding since it normally appears in blue cloth.
Price: £350.00
